What is an IFSC code?

IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It is an 11-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies a bank branch in India for electronic fund transfers. The Reserve Bank of India introduced it as part of the National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) and Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) systems and maintains the master list as a public dataset.

How the 11 characters are structured

Take ABHY0065114 — the IFSC for Abhyudaya Co-op Bank, Kankavli branch:

  • ABHY — bank identifier (4 letters). Always uppercase, fixed per bank.
  • 0 — reserved by RBI for future use. Always zero in the current scheme.
  • 065114 — branch identifier (6 alphanumeric). Unique within the bank.

Which transactions need IFSC?

  • NEFT — 30-minute batched transfers, 24×7, no transaction limit.
  • RTGS — real-time settlement, only for amounts ≥ ₹2 lakh.
  • IMPS — instant 24×7 transfers, per-transaction limit set by your bank (typically ₹5 lakh).
  • NACH — auto-debit mandates for SIPs, EMIs, insurance premiums, SaaS subscriptions. Needs IFSC plus the 9-digit MICR code.
  • UPI — does not need IFSC. UPI runs on virtual payment addresses (your UPI handle), not bank rails.

IFSC vs MICR vs SWIFT — when to use which

Code Length Use case
IFSC 11 chars Domestic transfers (NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, NACH)
MICR 9 digits Cheque clearing, NACH mandate setup
SWIFT / BIC 8 or 11 chars Inbound foreign-currency wire transfers

How to find your own IFSC code

  1. Look at the top of any cheque leaf from your account — the IFSC is printed in the top corner.
  2. Open your bank's mobile or net-banking app and view account details.
  3. Search this page by your bank name and branch.

Frequently asked questions

Direct answers about IFSC codes, encoded as FAQPage schema for search engines and AI answer engines.

What is an IFSC code?

IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies a bank branch in India for electronic funds transfer. The first 4 characters identify the bank (e.g., HDFC, SBIN, ABHY), the 5th is always 0 (reserved), and the last 6 identify the specific branch. The Reserve Bank of India publishes and maintains the full IFSC master list.

Where do I find my own IFSC code?

Your IFSC is printed on your bank passbook, cheque book (top corner), and shown on your net-banking dashboard. You can also search for your branch on HonestMoney.in — type your bank name in the search above and pick the branch where your account is held.

What is the difference between IFSC, MICR, and SWIFT codes?

IFSC is used for domestic NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, and NACH transfers within India. MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) is the 9-digit code on cheques used for cheque clearing and NACH mandate setup. SWIFT (or BIC) is the international code used for inbound foreign-currency wire transfers — only some bank branches in India are SWIFT-enabled.

Do I need a different IFSC for NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS?

No. The same IFSC code works for NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, and NACH. What changes is the rail itself — NEFT settles in 30-minute batches, RTGS settles in real-time but only for amounts ≥ ₹2 lakh, and IMPS is instant with per-transaction limits set by your bank.

Can the IFSC of my branch change?

Yes, occasionally. IFSC codes change when banks merge (for example, the SBI associate-bank mergers in 2017, Punjab National Bank + Oriental Bank + United Bank in 2020, the Vijaya + Dena + Bank of Baroda merger), when branches are re-coded by the RBI, or when a branch is shifted to a new operating bank. HonestMoney.in tracks the RBI monthly master file and updates within 48 hours of a change.

How do I add a beneficiary using an IFSC code?

In your net-banking or mobile-banking app, choose "Add beneficiary" → enter the recipient's account number, IFSC code, and name as on bank records → confirm via OTP. Most banks take 30 minutes to activate a new beneficiary before allowing transfers. For Razorpay or Cashfree payout JSON, use the same fields plus account_type.

Why is the IFSC structured as 4 letters + 0 + 6 chars?

The 4-letter bank code allows up to 456,976 unique banks (26^4). The hard-coded 0 in position 5 is reserved by the RBI for future use and currently always 0. The last 6 characters give each bank one million possible branch codes — enough for any Indian bank including SBI (which has roughly 22,000 branches and uses codes like SBIN0001234).

Is HonestMoney.in IFSC data official or unofficial?

HonestMoney.in re-publishes the RBI public IFSC master in a faster, mobile-first format. We are not the RBI and not affiliated with any bank. For high-value transactions, treat your bank's own passbook or net-banking portal as the final authority and use HonestMoney as a lookup convenience.

What happens if I send money to the wrong IFSC?

If the IFSC and account number match a real account at any bank, the transfer goes through to that account — banks do not match the recipient's name. If the IFSC is invalid or the account number does not exist at that branch, the transfer is reversed within 1-3 working days. Always paste, do not type, the IFSC if your bank allows it, and verify the recipient confirms receipt.

How often does HonestMoney.in refresh the IFSC database?

Monthly, from the RBI public IFSC master. The current dataset was last refreshed on 8 June 2026. Bank mergers, branch additions, and re-codings during the month appear in the next refresh cycle.
