Why These Calculators Exist
90% of Calculators Lie
by Omission.
They show nominal returns and skip inflation, tax, and fees. You see ₹50 lakh, you plan for ₹50 lakh, but you actually get ₹13 lakh of purchasing power. We fix that.
Inflation-Adjusted Values
Every calculator shows what your corpus is worth in today's rupees. ₹50 lakh in 20 years = ₹15.6 lakh today at 6% inflation. We don't hide this.
Post-Tax Returns
LTCG at 12.5%, STCG at 20%, slab-rate for debt — we deduct the tax so you see what you actually take home. No other major calculator does this.
Expense Ratio Impact
Direct plan (0.3% TER) vs regular (1.5% TER) can be ₹7-12 lakh difference on a ₹12 lakh investment. We show the rupee impact, not just percentages.

Calculator FAQs
Questions About Our
Financial Calculators
Are online financial calculators accurate?
Online calculators use standard financial formulas and give mathematically accurate results for the inputs you provide. However, they assume constant returns — real markets are volatile. A 12% CAGR delivered in a straight line produces a different outcome than 12% delivered with -20% and +44% swings. Use calculators for planning estimates, not precise predictions. Our calculators also show inflation-adjusted and post-tax values — something 90% of competitor calculators skip.
What return rate should I use in investment calculators?
Use historical 10-year+ CAGR for the specific asset class: Nifty 50 index funds = 12%, mid-cap funds = 14-15%, debt/hybrid funds = 7-9%, PPF = 7.1%, FD = 6.5-7%, gold = 10-11%. Never use 1-year or 3-year returns — they are misleading. For conservative planning, subtract 1-2% from historical averages. Always check the inflation-adjusted result to see real purchasing power.
Why do HonestMoney calculators show inflation-adjusted values?
Because ₹50 lakh in 20 years is NOT worth ₹50 lakh today. At 6% inflation, ₹50 lakh in 2046 has the purchasing power of just ₹15.6 lakh in 2026 rupees. Most calculators hide this — showing inflated nominal numbers that look impressive but mislead you into thinking you are wealthier than you will be. Our calculators show both nominal and real (today's value) numbers so you can plan honestly.
How is LTCG tax calculated on mutual fund SIP returns?
For equity mutual funds held over 1 year, gains above ₹1.25 lakh per financial year are taxed at 12.5% + 4% cess = effective 13%. Each SIP installment has its own purchase date, so FIFO (First In, First Out) applies on redemption. For a ₹10,000 monthly SIP redeemed after 13 months, only the first installment qualifies for LTCG — the rest may attract 20% STCG. Our SIP calculator factors in the 12.5% LTCG on total gains above ₹1.25 lakh.
What is the difference between direct and regular plan expense ratio?
Direct plans have 0.5-1.5% lower annual expense ratio because there is no distributor commission. On a ₹5,000 monthly SIP at 12% for 20 years: direct plan (0.3% TER) gives ₹47.8 lakh, regular plan (1.5% TER) gives ₹40.1 lakh — a difference of ₹7.7 lakh on ₹12 lakh invested. Our calculator lets you toggle expense ratio to see this impact in rupees.
Which financial calculator should I use first?
Start with the SIP Calculator if you are planning monthly investments in mutual funds. It shows projected corpus, inflation-adjusted real value, post-tax returns, and year-by-year growth. If you are comparing investment options, the upcoming SIP vs FD vs PPF calculator will show side-by-side results. If you are planning a home purchase, use the EMI Calculator to understand total interest cost.
Can I trust calculators that show 15-20% returns?
Be skeptical. While some mid-cap and small-cap funds have delivered 15-20% over 10 years, these are historical averages — not guarantees. Survivorship bias means you only see funds that did well; hundreds of underperformers were merged or closed. For planning, 12% for equity (conservative) and 8% for debt is realistic. If a calculator defaults to 15%+, it is likely trying to make returns look attractive to sell you a product.
How often are HonestMoney calculators updated?
Our calculators use mathematical formulas that do not change. However, we update the default values, tax rates, and educational content within 48 hours of any Budget or SEBI notification. The current tax rates reflected are from Budget 2024: STCG at 20% and LTCG at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh for equity mutual funds. Inflation default is 6% based on 10-year average CPI.
