Your Car Insurance Policy Exists as a Digital Document. Here Are 4 Ways to Download It — and What to Do When None of Them Work.
Every car insurance policy issued in India since IRDAI’s electronic issuance mandate is available as a digital PDF. You do not need to visit a branch, call an agent, or wait for a courier. The document sitting in your insurer’s system has full legal validity — identical to a printed copy.
The 4 download methods, ranked by reliability:
- Insurer website or app — works for 95%+ of policies
- DigiLocker — legally strongest, but insurer upload is inconsistent
- Email search — the simplest method most people forget
- mParivahan app — for traffic stop proof, not full policy download
If you are downloading because you need to renew your car insurance, start with Method 1 — you need the full policy schedule with your current NCB, IDV, and add-on details.
Method 1: Download From Your Insurer’s Website or App
This is the most reliable method. Every insurer maintains a self-service portal where you can download your policy document with OTP verification.
Steps:
- Go to your insurer’s website (see table below for direct links)
- Navigate to “Customer Login” or “Track Policy” or “My Account”
- Enter your policy number or registered mobile number
- Complete OTP verification
- Navigate to “My Policies” or “Policy Documents”
- Click “Download” — the PDF saves to your device
If you do not know your policy number: Most insurer portals let you search by registered mobile number or vehicle registration number.
If the portal shows an error: Insurer websites go down frequently during peak hours. Try the mobile app instead — apps generally have better uptime. If both fail, call customer care and request them to email the policy PDF.
Method 2: DigiLocker (Legally Equivalent to Original)
DigiLocker documents have legal equivalence to original documents under Rule 9A of the IT (Preservation and Retention of Information by Intermediaries Providing Digital Locker Facilities) Rules, 2016. No government authority, traffic officer, RTO, or court can reject a DigiLocker document.
Steps:
- Open DigiLocker app or go to digilocker.gov.in
- Log in with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number
- Go to “Pull Documents” or “Search Documents”
- Search for your insurer name (e.g., “ICICI Lombard”, “New India Assurance”)
- Select the insurer from the list
- Enter your policy number when prompted
- The document fetches and saves to your DigiLocker permanently
The catch: Over 30 insurers are integrated with DigiLocker, but integration does not mean every policy is uploaded. Many insurers — especially PSU insurers like National Insurance, Oriental Insurance, and United India — have inconsistent upload practices. Your policy may simply not be available on DigiLocker even though the insurer is “integrated.”
When DigiLocker fetch fails:
- The insurer has not pushed your specific policy to DigiLocker
- Your Aadhaar was not linked to the policy during purchase
- The policy was issued recently (allow 7-30 days)
- The insurer’s API connection to DigiLocker is temporarily down
Fix: Call your insurer’s customer care and explicitly request them to push your policy document to DigiLocker. Some insurers (HDFC ERGO, Bajaj Allianz) allow you to trigger the push from their own app.
Method 3: Search Your Email
Every IRDAI-regulated insurer is required to send the policy document via email at issuance. This is the method people most often overlook.
Search terms to use in your inbox:
- Your insurer’s name (e.g., “ICICI Lombard”, “Tata AIG”)
- “Policy schedule”
- “Motor insurance”
- “Certificate of insurance”
- Your vehicle registration number
- Your policy number (if you know it)
Check these folders: Inbox, Promotions (Gmail), Updates (Gmail), Spam, Trash.
Common problem: The agent used their own email address during purchase, so the policy was never emailed to you. In this case, contact the insurer directly with your registration number and request them to update your email and resend the document. This is one of several reasons to buy car insurance online rather than through an agent — you control your own contact details.
Method 4: mParivahan App (Traffic Stop Proof)
mParivahan is the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ official app. It pulls data from the VAHAN database and shows your vehicle’s insurance status.
Steps:
- Download mParivahan from Play Store or App Store
- Enter your vehicle registration number
- View insurance details: insurer name, policy number, validity dates
What mParivahan does: Shows insurance status, which is sufficient proof at traffic stops. Traffic police in most states accept it.
What mParivahan does not do: It does not provide the full policy PDF. You cannot download the policy document from mParivahan. It shows only basic status information pulled from the VAHAN database.
Limitation: Recently renewed policies can take 7-15 days to reflect on mParivahan due to the database update lag. If you just renewed, carry the insurer-issued PDF on your phone as backup.
For verifying if a policy actually exists and is genuine — especially useful if you bought through an unfamiliar agent — use the same verification methods described in our bike insurance check online guide. The IIB and VAHAN verification process is identical for cars and bikes.

What to Do When No Download Method Works
If none of the four methods produce your policy document:
Step 1: Call the insurer’s customer care. Have your vehicle registration number and any one of these: policy number, chassis number, engine number, or registered mobile number. Request them to email the policy PDF to your registered email. Turnaround: usually within 24 hours.
Step 2: Visit the nearest branch. Carry your RC, Aadhaar or PAN, and any previous correspondence. The branch can print a certified copy on the spot. This is especially useful for PSU insurers whose digital infrastructure is unreliable.
Step 3: Contact the agent or aggregator. If you bought through PolicyBazaar, InsuranceDekho, or Coverfox, log into your aggregator account — they store all policies purchased through them. If you bought through an agent, the agent should have the policy copy.
Step 4: Use IIB for basic verification. If you cannot download the policy but need to verify it exists, go to iib.gov.in and use V-Seva. Enter your registration number. This confirms the insurer name, policy number, and validity dates — enough for most verification needs. Works only for vehicles insured after April 2020.
Legal Validity: Digital Policy vs Physical Copy
| Scenario | Digital Copy Sufficient? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic police check | Yes | DigiLocker, mParivahan, or PDF on phone accepted. Some officers in rural areas may not be familiar — carry a printout as backup |
| Insurance claim filing | Yes | Insurers accept digital submissions through their app, portal, or email |
| RTO vehicle transfer | Mostly yes | Most RTOs accept DigiLocker. Some state RTOs still request printouts |
| Vehicle financing (bank) | Yes | Banks accept the emailed PDF from the insurer |
| Court proceedings | May need certified copy | For MACT cases or accident disputes, request a certified copy from the insurer |
| Car sale to buyer | Yes | Share the PDF. Buyer should verify independently via IIB or insurer |
IRDAI mandated electronic issuance of insurance policies. The digital document issued by the insurer is the original — not a “copy.” A printed version of the same PDF has no additional legal weight.
Bima Sugam: The Promised Single Dashboard
IRDAI announced Bima Sugam as a unified digital platform for all insurance transactions — buying, renewing, porting, and accessing policies across all insurers in one place. Think of it as UPI for insurance.
What it promises for car insurance:
- Single dashboard showing all your active motor policies
- One-click download of any policy from any insurer
- Seamless renewal and insurer switching
- Integrated claim filing
Current status (May 2026): Bima Sugam has been announced, discussed, and delayed multiple times since 2023. Initial phases were expected in 2024-2025. As of now, it is not operational for motor insurance policy downloads. When it launches, it will likely solve the DigiLocker inconsistency problem by creating a direct insurer-to-platform data pipeline.
Until Bima Sugam becomes functional, DigiLocker and insurer self-service portals remain your primary options.
When You Actually Need a Physical Copy
Despite legal equivalence of digital documents, three situations still practically require a physical printout:
1. Areas with poor network coverage. If you frequently drive through rural areas, hill stations, or highways with spotty connectivity, keep a printout in the glove box. You cannot show a DigiLocker document if your phone has no signal.
2. Older traffic police officers unfamiliar with digital documents. While DigiLocker is legally valid, ground enforcement is inconsistent. Some officers, particularly in smaller towns, may insist on a physical copy. A printout avoids a 20-minute argument on the roadside.
3. Accidental vehicle damage requiring immediate claim. At an accident scene, you may need to share policy details with the other party, a tow service, or a surveyor. A physical copy in the car is faster than searching your email while dealing with the situation.
How to get a physical copy: Download the PDF using Method 1 or 2, print it, and keep it in the car. If you need a certified hard copy, visit your insurer’s branch with ID proof.
Quick Reference: Download Your Car Insurance in Under 5 Minutes
| Your Situation | Best Method | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Know your policy number | Insurer website/app | 2-3 minutes |
| Do not know policy number | Search email inbox | 1-2 minutes |
| Need legally valid proof on phone | DigiLocker | 3-5 minutes |
| Traffic stop — need quick proof | mParivahan app | 1 minute |
| Nothing works online | Call insurer customer care | 24 hours |
| PSU insurer, all digital fails | Visit branch with RC + ID | Same day |
If you are downloading your policy because it recently lapsed and you need to check your options, act fast — every day without coverage means you are driving uninsured and at risk of losing your NCB after 90 days.
